Arette Allen never saw the storm coming.
Five weeks after her fiancé’s sudden death tore their future asunder, she’s piecing her life back together as a medical student and champion fencer. Then reality splinters again when a curse on his bloodline hurls her into Dioltas, a faraway realm divided between a lush emerald kingdom and the desperate deadlands it exploits.
Her only hope of returning home rests with another outsider known as The Bearer, who has been trapped in Dioltas for decades. To find him, she must rely on a stoic and gifted soldier, who hides his heart behind his armor; a golden princess, who masks her courage with duty; and the gallant Prince Talan, whose cleverness is overshadowed by his deep-rooted insecurity.
But finding The Bearer is only the beginning. An ancient and vengeful sorceress is hunting Prince Talan for reasons no one understands. As for Talan, he seems intent on winning Arette’s heart—for reasons she definitely doesn’t understand. As they journey together, her affection for him flickers into feelings she’s not ready to name. But when he's captured by agents of the sorceress, the curtain is pulled back to reveal a decades-old secret. Talan, not The Bearer, is the key to sending Arette home. Saber in hand, she will brave the realm’s dangers to save him, only to face a choice that could leave her mourning another chance at love.
Emerald and Bone is a romantic fantasy reimagining of L. Frank Baum's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.
She shaded her eyes to get a better look at the shallows, kneeling to inspect further. Huh. It was like ink had tainted the water nearest her—half the river was black. Even weirder, the ground on her side was muck and lifeless earth. Yet halfway across, that overgrown meadow bordered the blue side of the river like a sapphire set in verdant velvet. And there were cows grazing over there—actual cows.
